This PD session will focus on a couple of subjects which have arisen in some previous PD sessions, but which we thought was worth revisiting and exploring in more depth. The first is ‘Small Talk’: How Do We Navigate The Minefield of Pre-Assignment Waiting Rooms?’. Often we are sitting in the same room with a client for up to two hours (or more) before an assignment, and conversations can be tricky to manage. The second, somewhat related, subject is ‘Managing Relationships’. We are often exhorted to stay involved in the Deaf Community in order to enhance our skills, but this means wearing a number of hats; interpreter, friend, partner, sports colleague, political activist – to name a few. How do we manage these different identities when we are working? Come and discuss your experiences and challenges, and learn some strategies to add to your professional toolkit.
3rd year students who have already started practicum (actual interpreting, not just observations) are welcome to attend.
As usual, we will be providing drinks and nibbles from 5.30pm with discussions starting at 6.30pm. Please RSVP by Monday 16th, so that we know how many to cater for.
